The College Board is offering the option for schools to administer AP exams digitally, via paper and pencil (traditional method), or both for certain subjects this year. The digital AP Exam subjects are:
- AP Computer Science Principles
- AP English Language and Composition
- AP English Literature and Composition
- AP European History
- AP Seminar
- AP U.S. History
- AP World History: Modern
- AP African American Studies (2023-24 pilot schools only) - This exam is offered as Digital ONLY
Total Registration has developed ways schools can choose between Digital and Paper or note that they are offering both modes. TR has also created easy ways for students to choose between Digital and Paper (if the school offers both AND the school wishes for the student to choose) or for AP coordinators to move students into either Digital or Paper in Total Registration. When schools offer both exam modes, it will be helpful to designate which mode a student is taking so schools can more easily assign students to exam rooms, as the College Board requires Digital exams to be given separately from Paper exams.
Choosing Exam Modes
If your school is offering BOTH (digital and paper) exam modes of any of the exams this year, you must contact Total Registration so we can activate that option for your school. Once TR activates the option, you can go to AP > Manage/Set Up AP Exams, click the edit icon for the exam, and select the exam mode you will offer. NOTE: If your school is only offering Paper (traditional) OR Digital exams, there is no need to contact TR.
Allowing Students to choose Exam Mode
If you offer both exam modes and want students to decide which exam mode to take, you can answer "yes" to the question on the Edit Exam page of the AP configuration and then alert students to log in to their student account at TotalRegistration.net and select the exam mode for AP exams you are offering in both formats. To do this, go to AP > Manage/Set Up AP Exams and click the edit icon for the exam. Below is a screenshot showing the question. Note: Students must first register for the exam via your school's Total Registration webpage and then log in to the student account at TotalRegistration.net to select the exam mode.
Assigning Students to Exam Mode
If you are offering both exam modes but want to assign Digital or Paper to each student instead of the student choosing the exam mode, you can go to AP > AP Report Center > Exam Rosters > Individual Exam Rosters and click the link for the exam name. You will then see a roster of students registered for that AP exam. You can click the select checkbox next to the names you want to assign to a particular exam mode, choose Digital or Paper from the Action drop-down menu, click Take Action, choose the exam mode, and then you will see the student listed in either the Digital or Paper category of the Exam Mode column. You can do this with individual students or batches of students.
Assigning Students to Rooms based on Exam Mode
The College Board has stated that students taking digital exams of a subject must be in a separate location/room from the students taking the paper version of the exam. If you'd like to designate a room to Digital so that you can more easily assign the digital students to it, you can simply add a note to the Room Note column when you go to AP > Manage/Set Up AP Exams, click the edit icon to edit the exam, and link rooms to that particular exam.
